about

A note about Essential:

Like so many others, I’ve grown increasingly concerned about the flippancy with which the federal government and certain municipal and state governments are approaching our current crisis. I’m baffled as to why a catastrophe of this magnitude has been downplayed, dismissed, and (worst of all) used to fuel political discord. And I’m aghast at the disingenuous use of the word ‘essential’ by those in power—those who offer up lip-service to healthcare professionals, postal workers, custodians, meat-packers, restaurant workers, grocery store employees, and teachers, all the while treating those same groups as if they’re utterly expendable.

Ultimately, this song communicates nothing you don’t already know (or feel), but writing and recording it was a cathartic experience for me, at least, and I hope it manages to connect with listeners on some level.

lyrics

Are you essential?
Consequential?
You look dispensable to me

‘Cause we’ve reached a critical mass
And it might sound crass
But something’s got to give

Some have got to give up everything

Is this proxemics
Or just polemics?
We’ve got resentments by the fistful

And so we lob aspersions
Guarding vain diversions
From the same old, same old

New normal

Antiseptic analytics:
Sure, the world is rather callous
But we can’t all factor into its calculus

So, are you essential? Are you essential?
Are you essential? Are you essential?
