Philology
You can say good-bye in forty languages
You can tell a myriad of tales
When I open up my arms to take you in
You embark again and off you sail
You're long distance calls
Disconnected ends
Montezuman halls
And “Good-bye, my friend”
You could charm the stars out of their lofty heights
You could woo the moon down to the earth
I cannot stay livid in your amber eyes
Turning saturninity to mirth
You're a ship from Spain
And a gondolier
Sunlight on the Seine
And “Good-bye, my dear”
You've been promising for longer than I know
How you're going to make it up to me
You've been gone for something like millennia
Meanwhile, I've been stationary
You're a famed philologist
I'm an ordinary fool
Standing in the London mists
You swore you'd steal the
Windsor jewels
Stuck here in this rustic town
Longing for my bon vivant
When I'm feeling six feet down
I pretend it's me you want
I pretend it's me you want
You can say good-bye in forty languages
I can tell myself you'll soon return
I am all a-flutter at the thought of it
Like a lunatic, I cannot learn
I'm a busted wheel
On a Pullman car
And I feel mobile
But I won't get far

Ernest Tubb

Ernest Tubb
It's a gorgeous day, there's no doubt
It makes you warm within and without
And in its glow you so plainly see
I am not, I am not what I used to be
You kiss my cheek and then turn away
I watch you leave and wish you could stay
I say “goodbye”, but you cannot hear
Dry my eyes, dry my eyes as you disappear
And I'm a-walking the floor
I'm walking the floor
I'm walking the floor over you
Got Mister Tubb here to sing for me
In all his melancholic glory
With every warbling refrain
Wish I was, wish I was your Blue-Eyed Elaine
And though you come back home every night
Grin and pretend you're doing alright
You say the words and you play the part
You are gone, you are gone from this broke-down heart
And I'm a-walking the floor
I'm walking the floor
I'm walking the floor over you
I want to sink down
I want to drink just a
trifle too much
So I can think, so I can think
that I have loved you enough
I just waltz on across the room
Hum along to that shuffling tune
Fill my glass, as the stereo spins
I want to know, want to know you could want me again
And I'm a-walking the floor
I'm walking the floor
I'm walking the floor over you
And I'm a-walking the floor
I'm walking the floor
I'm walking the floor over you

Pugilism
03:23
|

Pugilism
I'm a fugitive from heartache
The embodiment of bad breaks
Caught in monumental mistakes
But my recovery's begun
You're my starry eyed pretender
And my tireless defender
You're a simple kind of splendor
My rising and setting sun
Will you love me on the lonely climb
Still better when I'm past my prime?
Will you hold me when
I'm on the mend
Still closer when I'm
broken down again?
There's a bit of pugilism
In each human organism
Every petty little schism
Has me ready for a fight
But you feelingly defuse me
'Til those fiery spirits lose me
There's a exorcising beauty
In the shelter of your sight
Will you love me on the lonely climb
Still better when I'm past my prime?
Will you hold me when
I'm on the mend
Still closer when I'm
broken down again?
You're my elixir
And an alchemistic dream
Healing my ailments
Giving flesh a gilded gleam
Yet what am I but
A shadow on your face
Destroying joy and
Sullying your glories with disgrace?
When we've played our final love scene
And grey grows the silver screen
Will you look back on where we've been
And declare that it was good?
Will you love me on the lonely climb
Still better when I'm past my prime?
Will you hold me when
I'm on the mend
Still closer when I'm
broken down again?

Up And Away

Up and Away (Strawberry Roan)
You've got your saddle shoes
Worn ebony and bone
Weathered old hand-me-downs
Up on your strawberry roan
And she's good enough
To carry you up and away
You've got his necklace on
It's setting your heart aglow
You're ready for anything
All ready for him to show
And he's good enough
To carry you up and away
Laughingly he will appear
Carelessly and cavalier
O, he's not coming home to stay
Quickly fades the lovers' tryst
With a callous little kiss
He rides off upon his dapple grey
You've got your jilted soul
Patently taciturn
He's got a lock of your hair
Ribboned with dark auburn
And that's good enough
To carry him up and away
So, get you to Wichita
Or maybe to Abilene
Watch all your silver turn
Into tarnished argentine
But you've got your saddle shoes
Worn ebony and bone
Weathered old hand-me-downs
Up on your strawberry roan
And that's good enough
To carry you up and away

Alan Clark

Alan Clark
Low sun, well past five
At his regular dive
Alan stole in from his day
There at the bar, he leaned
Cast somewhere in between
The simply plain and too outre
When Alan Clark caught sight
Of a vision so pure and bright
It nearly knocked him off his bended knees
And she would have fanned the fire
Had she only seen a spark
If she could've seen you falling
She would have caught you
Alan Clark
She silently slipped in
Through the dust and the din
Ordering mostly in pantomime
Amidst the clamoring crowd
She was bashful and bowed
Hoping to blend in with the grime
He thought of reaching out
But he clung to his doubts
And had another shot of sloe gin
And she would have fanned the fire
Had she only seen a spark
If she could've seen you falling
She would have caught you
Alan Clark
She was what he'd always wanted
And yet could never find
A figment of the most fantastic
Places in his mind
Imagining the thrill of contact
Exchanging pleasantries
But what he longed to say was
“Darling, you were meant for me”
And Alan knew she'd gone
Leaving him to dwell on
Regrets he'd rather just ignore
And she would have fanned the fire
Had she only seen a spark
If she could've seen you falling
She would have caught you
Alan Clark

Dearest

Dearest
O, come and walk with me a while
I'd give my heart to see you smile
We'll lose our heads, forget the miles
And you won't see it coming. . .no-o-o-o-o
In starlight hours, we'll agree
That all superlatives are free
You'll sidle up so close to me
And I won't see it coming. . .no-o-o-o-o
The world may talk of our affairs
And pummel us with earthly cares
But find our souls no worse-for-wear
And they won't see us coming. . .no-o-o-o-o
Lifetimes will flash before our eyes
Under kaleidoscopic skies
Long days will pass and years go by
And we won't see them coming. . .no-o-o-o-o
And, in the end, we'll still agree
That every gift of love is free
And if you must depart from me
O, I won't see it coming. . .no-
O, I won't see it coming. . .no-
O, I won't see it coming. . .no-o-o-o-o

Furies (Jezebel)
03:30
|
|||
Furies (Jezebel)
Bluer than Jeremiah
And wide awake
You trace the steps of each
Calamitous mistake
Treacherous Jezebel
She could not be true
Those eyes of emerald cast
A spell over you
You lived so simply with your
Suitable wife
Hid so completely in your
Plain little life
Your blushing bride, once
Beautiful in her bloom
Now seemed as frigid as
A desolate tomb
They'll give no quarter, though
You beg for the end
Come the dark hour when
The Furies descend
Lust came on strongly, like some
Juggernaut force
And swept you up into
Her lecherous course
She bade you jump and so you
Foolishly leapt
Senselessly following her
Down to the depths
Her countenance was coy
Her smile, tenebrous
She whispered, “All I do,
I'm doing for us”
Unable to resist
The lure of her charms
Her comely body laying
Warm in your arms
They'll give no quarter, though
You beg for the end
Come the dark hour when
The Furies descend
Your trusting wife cried out
The plan fell in place
But no foul scheme has ever
Proven fail safe
Your lover fled without a
Hint of remorse
Left you red-handed, standing
Next to the corpse
For her persimmon lips and
The shape of her thighs
For the sweetly deceptive
Sound of her sighs
Treacherous Jezebel
She led you astray
And held you captive as her
Credulous prey
They'll give no quarter, though
You beg for the end
Come the dark hour when
The Furies descend

Blue Narwhal

Blue Narwhal
Like Viking lords or Inuits
When all the Northern Lights are lit
Through tundra's bitterest snowfall
We'll go sailing with the blue narwhal
Ivory scepters fit for kings
I've no need for such costly things
No gleaming thrones or grand mead halls
Just the vision of the blue narwhal
There's surely many a doubter
Who will question every part of her
The proofs are all Empirical
Reason cannot see the blue narwhal
You're such a mystery to man
Like the griffin and leviathan
Enchanted and fantastical
Like the elusive and blue narwhal
Like the elusive and blue narwhal

Seven Hills

Seven Hills
Lucrezia, O, Lucrezia
How breathlessly I behold
The fairness of your features
Held in treasuries untold
Splendor beyond all standards
Beyond measure, beyond worth
Like Venus, you embody
All the pleasures of the Earth
The Seven Hills reflect you in
The greying grandeur of the gloam
More glorious and holier than Rome
I've heard the cruelest rumors
From the lips of your betray'rs:
Deception and debauchery
And family affairs
But I cannot believe such things
Of one so undefiled
They spurn your name, but you remain
As precious as a child
The Seven Hills reflect you in
The greying grandeur of the gloam
More glorious and holier than Rome
Yet we cannot expect to change
The wicked ways of man
Especially within the
Shadow of the Vatican
The foundations are foundering
The walls are crumbling down
Still Alexander clutches
His charlatan's tarnished crown
Now, bloodied on these sacred steps
Saint Peter, hear my plea
Preserve the one I love
Always and evermore for me
The Seven Hills reflect you in
The greying grandeur of the gloam
More glorious and holier than Rome

Lone Ranger

Lone Ranger
Four hand-me-down two dollar bills
Fire-ant mounds and childish thrills
A life begun on guileless fun
Just stubborn kids with harmless guns
We watched as lawmen crossed the range
To dens of vice in cities, strange
With justice won, they’d chase the sun
All polished nerves and honest guns
Bent on the kicks that'd kill you most
You fill your head with friendless ghosts
And try to run from all you’ve done
With crooked aim and loaded guns
There's nothing I can do
There's nothing I can say
To make this dreadful feeling
Go away
Your baby girl has gone away
Said maybe she’d be back someday
But truths don’t come from serpent tongues
She’s packing lies and stolen guns
There's nothing I can do
There's nothing I can say
To make this dreadful feeling
Go away, From you
It strikes me how things disappear:
White hats and souls not closed by fear
A father’s love the faithful son
Like bloodless wars and harmless,
Harmless guns

Wandering Eye

Wandering Eye
Maybe you're mine and maybe I'm yours
But the world is riddled with saboteurs
I'll do every little thing that I can
But remember, honey, I'm just one man
Like a moth to a flame
I am mesmerized
I cannot be blamed
For my wandering eye
Tell about the birds and tell about the bees
Baby, they don't practice monogamy
Well, I gave my word and I took the vow
Guess I meant it then; I don't mean it now
Like a moth to a flame
I am mesmerized
I've been tied and tamed
But not euthanized
You can drag me to church, you can take me to court
You can keep the condo at the beach resort
But this is something that I can't control
I've got jittering hands and a hole in my soul
I've got jittering hands and a hole in my soul
Maybe I'm yours and maybe you're mine
Put your good dress on and sing “Auld Lang Syne”
But when midnight falls on a brand new year
You'll be fast asleep; I'll be far from here
Like a moth to a flame
I am mesmerized
Nothing stays the same
Honey, why should I?
I've been tied and tamed
But not euthanized
I cannot be blamed
For my wandering eye

Rosamond Oliver
Rosamond Oliver
Does not tread upon the ground
Rosamond Oliver
Levitates without a sound
As she floats on through your door
None could ask for any more
Than Rosamond Oliver
Blossoming cheek of red
Blessed Mary's vestal blue
Easily turn your head
And your best affections, too
And I'm always standing near
Shedding adolescent tears
O'er Rosamond Oliver
O, she is sure a work of fiction
O, such a clueless ingénue
Breathing feminine perfection
How will I ever live up to
Rosamond Oliver
Tell me what do you see
When you look into my eyes
Isn't there anything
That you will not criticize
What do you expect of me
I am never going to be
Like Rosamond Oliver
O, she is sure a work of fiction
O, such a clueless ingénue
Breathing feminine perfection
How will I ever live up to
Rosamond Oliver
Now I must take my leave
For I long have known the truth
So, don't play make-believe:
I am just a substitute
Go on wasting all your breath
I am about sick to death
Of Rosamond Oliver
